Alicante no smoking on the beach, new sustainability approach

Believe it or not, cigarettes are not only bad for your health and those around you, but also bad for the environment. The smoke from the cigarettes has a negative effect on the air we breathe and the cigarette butts cause pollution by being carried, to drains and from there to rivers, beaches and oceans. The chemicals found in cigarettes are toxic and harmful for wildlife and fish.

When by the beach, there are often lots of people smoking, how many of these people disregard their cigarette butts properly? How many cigarette butts are left on the beach and swept away by the sea? More than we’d like to think. It is estimated that a cigarette filter takes around 12-15 years to degrade at sea.

In 2020, Alicante decided to test a new beach sustainability approach: beaches without smoke! The purpose of the campaign was to help bring about more sustainable beaches and a more pleasant environment for beachgoers.

The trial remained permanent. Smoking has now been fully banned on all of Alicantes beaches and coves, this totals to around 23 kilometres of coastline which is now smokeless! But, Alicante isn't the only one banning smokers, New South Wales, Murcia and Wales are also in tow.

Banning individuals from smoking on beaches will have a positive effect on the public's health, pollution, wildlife and our marine life.

We’d like to know your thoughts… how would you feel if you were asked to stop smoking while on your favourite beach? What do you think about having someone smoking right next to you when you are sunbathing with your children? Head over to our Twitter and let us know.
